Some sources say the day was created by a Michigan disc jockey and is celebrated on his birthday. Other sources say it takes place on August 10 because it was on that date in 1985 when lead singer Simon Le Bon was involved in a near-fatal boating accident. Fans celebrate the day, and the band has also been involved, by hosting trivia contests on their Twitter, posting messages to their fans, and sharing videos, song snippets, and MP3 downloads with them.
