Chinese New Year, or “spring festival” if you’re Chinese, celebrates the season of renewal. In Chinese mythology, this is when a beast called The Nian comes out of hiding to attack shops, property and people (especially children). The loud noises and celebrations scare away the terrible Nian to ensure a fruitful, non-devoured year.
